Our Fall Day

We were scientists today in 1st Grade.  There is a tree right outside our window that we are going to observe this year as it changes through the seasons.  Today we all went outside to do our Fall observation.  The children’s task was to record exactly what they saw.

Then we came back into our classroom and put our work up on the big screen.  Each child was able to describe to the class what they observed.  It was amazing to see the different details they each found and recorded.  This was the first time we used the projector this way and it was very exciting!

After that, some artists went to work making a tree collage with Fall colors.

And some writers went to work making lists of things we find in Fall.  Some also wrote some scary Fall number stories.

We ended our day in the science lab where we took apart flowers to study the seeds.

It was a pretty fun day!

Sometimes the kids are so proud of their work they ask me to take a picture of it.  Here are a few from this week.

Happy Birthday Jameson!  He even got to go to Author’s Chair today to read his story.  He was very excited to tell us how much he likes playing games with his family.  We wish you a very special day!!

What did you do in school today?

You have to love it when kids skip their fun center time to continue on with their writing.  Here are a few emerging authors at work:

Here are a couple more shots of center time:

When we arrive in the morning, we have time for Math Explorations.  These are some materials we will be using in math this year.  For now, we are just experimenting with them and trying to discover new things about these materials.

Science Lab!  I’ve decided I’m bringing my camera with me every time I go pick up the kids from science because they are always up to interesting things in there!  Today I found them observing plants and discussing their parts.  Look at these young scientists at work!

Homework was a success!  Everyone brought their math homework in on Tuesday and we shared it with the class.  We also talked about who everyone read to at home.  Please continue to send the books back to school the next day so we can use them in reading groups.  Thank you!!

Centers is definitely one of the favorite times of the day in 1st Grade!  It’s their choice time where they get to paint, build, play games and spend relaxed time with each other.  We had an exciting new addition this week to center time:  a puppet theater!  Here are some fun pictures of them at play.

Part of our Everyday Math curriculum is having the children play math games.  Here are the 3 games we have learned so far.  Ask your child to tell you about them.  They can easily be played at home, too.
