Look at all these creative characters who showed up in 1st Grade today for Character Day!  What fun it was to guess who everyone was.  For snack, we made witches hats and practiced how to read directions in a recipe.  It was a yummy treat for all of us.  After that, we did some Halloween math and rhymes.  We ended the day in Science Lab.  Ask your child to tell you about Squiddy.  They did some magic with Squiddy today!  Have a safe and fun Halloween everyone!!

We had a really fun field trip to Red Apple Farm on Tuesday.  The kids picked apples and pumpkins, went on a tractor ride, visited with the animals, tasted yummy apple cider and had a picnic lunch.  When we came back to school we made a list of all our favorite things about the trip, using lots of good details and describing words which is what we are learning about in Writer’s Workshop.  On Wednesday, we took our list and started to make a class book about our trip.  It will be done in time for you to see it at conference time.  Until then, here are a few pictures!

This is a project we have been working on during our computer lab time using Kid Pix.  Thank you so much to Mrs. Gravina who helped us all along the way and put this final movie together for our class!  I hope you enjoy getting to know our classmates!

Reading Workshop

One of the many amazing things about 1st Grade is the growth we see in the children in their reading and writing skills.  Even children who come in reading, make such progress as the year goes on.  Here are some pictures of our readers and writers at work.  Every day (except Wednesday) children meet in a small group with a teacher to read and discuss a “Just Right” book that is at a good reading level for them.  Then, they write about the book they are reading in their Reading Journals.  After that, you will see them doing all kinds of independent reading choices in the room.  Ask your child what his/her favorite choice is at reading workshop time!

Fundations is the program we are using for phonics, spelling and handwriting skills.  Ask your child to tell you about Echo the Owl.  Echo comes to visit us everyday and teaches us all about our letter sounds.  This program has been up and running for a few weeks now and we’ve seen lots of improvement already in our handwriting!
