On the day before our Thanksgiving break, 1st grade stopped our usual lessons and devoted a whole day to reading.  What a fun way for these children to practice their growing reading skills!  We started off the day with lots of cozy reading time with friends.

Then we read a recipe and made turkey cupcakes to share with our friends.

We also read poems and decorated them to share with our families at Thanksgiving.

We had several read alouds by both teachers and students!

And we even squeezed in some quiet time reading alone.

It was a super fun day!!

I asked the students to get out number lines to help them do some math problems today.  I overheard one boy say, “What do we need them for?  We have our fingers and our mind.”  Of course.  I should have thought of that!

We made our last trip out to the Greenhouse yesterday for a fun project with Dawn making pine cone bird feeders for the winter birds staying around Leverett!  The Greenhouse has been a great learning project that our class has participated in since school started.  We will return again in the Spring.

The children were delighted to have Dorothy, their favorite Kindergarten teacher from last year, come to visit our classroom for a morning last week. She read a book to the class and sang several songs with us.  What a treat!

Here are some pictures of more wonderful patterns being made in math class.  We also started learning about odd and even numbers.  We counted the number of objects in our pattern to see if it was odd or even.  Ask your child to tell you how we learned to tell if a number was even or odd.
