It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly! We came into our classroom this morning to a brand new butterfly who had just emerged from the chrysalis. The kids were so excited! As we sat down to begin our science work, 2 more butterflies started to emerge and the kids were able to watch the whole process. Since butterfly centers were the plan for the day, it couldn’t have been timed more perfectly! The kids observed the butterflies in action, painted pictures of them, worked on puzzles, read books and opened up the new Insect Kit that the Field family gave to our class today in honor of Matthew’s 7th birthday! It was a very exciting day.
A Work Find is coming home today with the new “Bug Words” we have been studying. Try to talk to your child about these words and see how many he/she can identify. Definitely stop in our classroom soon if you can to meet our new butterfly friends!!

The 1st Grade and 4th Grade have decided to team up this year to be reading buddies. Every Friday afternoon 4th grade comes to visit our classroom and the kids pair up to read to each other. Last week the 1st graders took out some of the brand new stories they just created during Writing Workshop to read to their new buddies. Some 4th graders chose a favorite book to read to their little kid buddy. It’s a very sweet way to end a Friday afternoon!

We had exciting news in our classroom this week! 8 of our caterpillars have turned into a chrysalis! The children had lots of fun observing them and watching us move them to the big Butterfly House where they will stay until they emerge as butterflies.
We also spent time making our own “Insect Reports” today. Each child chose an insect to read about and collect information on. Then they recorded what they found and used collage to make a picture of their insect. Lastly, we found partners to read our reports to. Here are pictures of them at work. Stop by sometime to see our Insect Reports and Butterfly House!

We made bugs! To go along with our insect theme, we used egg cartons to represent the parts of an insect that we are learning about: 3 body parts and 6 legs. Your child should be bringing home a self made insect today!
We have also spent time observing the caterpillars who are living in our room.
The excitement has carried over to recess and many children are hunting for insects during recess. We make sure to release them to their own habitat at the end of the day!
This week we also created our class rules, modifying the school rules we have to make sense for 1st graders. Here is the poster we created together.
