Look who showed up in 1st Grade today for Character Day! We had lots of favorite characters from some of our favorite books.
Character Day turned into Reading Day. We had Miss Ross, our principal (or Strega Nona today!), come in to read to us.
Then we went down to the 3rd Grade and listened to them read their newly published books to us. They are writing Small Moment stories just like us!
We came back to our room and did some reading of our own with a partner. I love listening to the kids read to each other, so proud of this skill that is new for many of them.
And finally, remember those pumpkins from yesterday? Today we counted the seeds from the pumpkins. The kids put the seeds in groups of ten and we counted them together. Each pumpkin had over 400 seeds! Who knew?! We were all very surprised. They were little pumpkins!
Happy Halloween, everyone!!

We were scientists today in first grade. We got into groups and predicted what the weight, circumference, number of stripes and amount of seeds was for our pumpkins. Then we did observations with a scale and a measuring tape. We found what the accurate answers were. We compared our predictions to our observations and talked about how to make smart guesses. The kids learned a lot about teamwork and how to work together to accomplish a task. Right before I sent them off to get all the seeds out of their pumpkins, I warned them that the pulp might be a little slimy to touch. “We are scientists,” one girl shouted. “We don’t care about slime!!”. I loved it. After our science investigation was over, we got out paper, scissors, glue and markers to turn a pumpkin poem into a beautiful craft project. Look for it coming home today with your child. I hope your child has fun reading it to you!!

We are learning about patterns! We made patterns with craft sticks. We are looking for patterns on the 100 Chart. We are counting by 5’s and 10’s, using our classroom store to count money, and we are learning all the numbers that go together to make 10. Lots of hard work! See the kids in action below.

We had an assembly today. Kyle Dine came to sing with the children and teach them about food allergies. It was a fun and informative presentation.
We also had some very proud sorters at math time! Look at these dominoes sorted by color. Yesterday we were sorting words and tried to find ADJECTIVES that described Fall. A Fall poem came home in your child’s backpack yesterday that had lots of adjectives in it.

In math we are learning how to count pennies and nickels. The kids played a new math game today with a partner. They counted coins and compared them with how much their partner had. I overheard one boy say to his partner with surprise, “We are learning AND we are having fun!” Imagine that! Just what I love to hear.
We also had a Fundations lesson. This is the time in the day when we are learning good handwriting, phonics and spelling skills. Look at this beautiful handwriting!
And of course, we had Centers! The kids favorite time of the day where they get to be creative and choose their own work. We’ve had some wonderful creations in the block area lately.
