This favorite USA Map that is in our classroom.  It’s a work on our Social Studies shelf and the kids love doing it.  IMG_1985

Look at the new blocks we have in the block area.  We’ve seen them used in many creative ways.

Here we are learning about surface area.  The kids had a challenge to see how many units it would take to cover the table.  Each group had to choose two different units to use and compare the results.

Our love of pets continues…..Here is Zuri with her pet dog, Gretal.  She came to visit first grade this week and the kids loved her.      Zuri did a fantastic job showing us the tricks her pet could do and telling us about how to take care of a dog.  IMG_1992     IMG_1996

Maiya’s mom, Laurie, came in today to do a special project with the class about Chinese New Year.  She read a book to us and then led us in a creative, fun activity making a paper horse since it is the year of the horse!  You should see them coming home with your child soon.

Here we are reading our stories to our friends.  It was so nice to hear each student sharing these important moments in their lives with their friends.

There was a lot of excitement in our room on the day before vacation.  Collin brought in a snowman making kit and all the children excitedly gathered around him to make snow friends to take home or hang in our classroom window.  IMG_1921

Then our 4th Grade buddies came in to visit.  The older children helped the younger ones make mitten ornaments to take home.  They each wrote a kind note to their friend on the back.  Then we had a special snack together before heading down to the December assembly where the older children sang songs for us.

Now we are back at school.  We started the day today practicing one of our morning greetings where each child says good morning to another 1st grader and offers a kind comment like, “I hope you have a good day!” or “I love the sweater you are wearing.” or “Thank you for being my friend!”.  This always starts the day out on a happy note.  IMG_1936

We worked on creating a map of our state, MA, and labeling some important, fun places.  The children talked about which place they would visit if they were going on vacation!  IMG_1937 IMG_1939

And we did partner reading with a buddy where children practice reading with each other.

If your child comes home and asks to go “owling” that is thanks to this beautiful book we read today called Owl Moon.  In the book a father takes his child out into the winter woods at night to look for owls.  It’s a wonderful story that mesmerized the children and they all reported they were going home to ask if they could go owling, too.  Sounds like fun!
