In Fundations we are learning about digraphs. We are finding them in words, underlining them in our writing. Ask your child to tell you all the digraphs we have learned and what sounds they make.
We spent some time painting with watercolors to illustrate a beautiful poem I found that reminded me of the Pledge of Allegiance we had just learned about. We had a really good discussion about what this poem means. Then the kids set out to paint a picture they thought represented the poem. We hung them outside on our bulletin board because they came out so beautiful.
We filled our jar by working together as a team to get things done in our classroom. So we had a “popsicle party” to celebrate!
We worked on writing research books about one American Symbol. You will see these coming home next week.
In math we are learning how to measure with non-standard units of measurement. This week we learned about how important it was to use the same unit whenever you measure something.
We learned about the Capitol of our state.
We have been working on a project on school I don’t want to tell you too much about because it will be coming home soon as a gift for you. The kids are so proud of it! We are learning all the ways our families are the same and some of the special ways we are different as well. I can’t wait for you to see them!
Don’t forget our Mitten Tree! Any donations you send in will be sent to the Survival Center in Amherst.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Today we took a trip down to 2nd grade to visit their ocean museum. The kids studied tidal pools and wanted to share their work with us. This is one special thing about LES. There is a lot of sharing of work between classes and celebrations at end of units. It was so nice to learn about ocean animals from our older friends.
Back in our classroom, we started to look more deeply at one American symbol: the American flag. We read about the flag and made attempts to make one of our own out of construction paper. We even watched a short movie clip of astronauts placing the flag on the moon! That was very exciting for the kids to see.
We used our poetry notebooks to help us cut up the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and put it back in the right order. Earlier this week we had a good discussion about what the Pledge means. We discussed words like: justice, freedom, allegiance, liberty. These are big words for young people to understand and they mean different things to many people. This would be a perfect time for you to sit down with your child and talk about what the Pledge of Allegiance, and some of the challenging words in it, mean to you.
We also took out some cool new puzzles about our country. This is all a part of our social studies unit on Civics and Government. As a part of our unit on America, we will be reading about AMERICANS, like you! A book will be coming home for your child to do for homework that asks about your family traditions and celebrations. We will share these books with the class. Look for them next week.
