We finished our American Symbols unit this week.  Children chose their favorite symbol we learned about and represented what they learned through drawing, writing and collage.  They each came out so different!

Thanks so much for all the cards, cookies and gifts that came in to school today.  I truly treasure each one and the excitement on the faces of the kids as they bring in special things from home.  Wishing you all a wonderful holiday time.  Hope you find some special moments with your child over our long break from school.

In Fundations we are learning about digraphs.  We are finding them in words, underlining them in our writing.  Ask your child to tell you all the digraphs we have learned and what sounds they make.IMG_4085 IMG_4087 IMG_4086

We spent some time painting with watercolors to illustrate a beautiful poem I found that reminded me of the Pledge of Allegiance we had just learned about.  We had a really good discussion about what this poem means.  Then the kids set out to paint a picture they thought represented the poem.  We hung them outside on our bulletin board because they came out so beautiful.IMG_4089 IMG_4094 IMG_4091 IMG_4090

We filled our jar by working together as a team to get things done in our classroom.  So we had a “popsicle party” to celebrate!

In math we are learning how to measure with non-standard units of measurement.  This week we learned about how important it was to use the same unit whenever you measure something.

We have been working on a project on school I don’t want to tell you too much about because it will be coming home soon as a gift for you.  The kids are so proud of it!  We are learning all the ways our families are the same and some of the special ways we are different as well.  I can’t wait for you to see them!

American Flag

Today we took a trip down to 2nd grade to visit their ocean museum.  The kids studied tidal pools and wanted to share their work with us.  This is one special thing about LES.  There is a lot of sharing of work between classes and celebrations at end of units.  It was so nice to learn about ocean animals from our older friends.

Back in our classroom, we started to look more deeply at one American symbol:  the American flag.  We read about the flag and made attempts to make one of our own out of construction paper.  We even watched a short movie clip of astronauts placing the flag on the moon!  That was very exciting for the kids to see.

We used our poetry notebooks to help us cut up the words to the Pledge of Allegiance and put it back in the right order.  Earlier this week we had a good discussion about what the Pledge means.  We discussed words like:  justice, freedom, allegiance, liberty.  These are big words for young people to understand and they mean different things to many people.  This would be a perfect time for you to sit down with your child and talk about what the Pledge of Allegiance, and some of the challenging words in it, mean to you.

We also took out some cool new puzzles about our country.  This is all a part of our social studies unit on Civics and Government.  As a part of our unit on America, we will be reading about AMERICANS, like you!  A book will be coming home for your child to do for homework that asks about your family traditions and celebrations.  We will share these books with the class.  Look for them next week.

American Symbols

We have just started learning about American Symbols.  Yesterday the kids did some research on Pebble Go, reading about the bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, American flag, Liberty Bell and White House.  Then they wrote a little about each one and did some coloring.  We read several books about America and what makes us diverse.  This started a great conversation amongst the children, about how we can be the same and different all at the same time.  You’ll see some of this work coming home soon.

.  IMG_4062 IMG_4063 IMG_4064 IMG_4065 IMG_4066IMG_4060  Maps also continue to be very popular on our social studies center.

Mrs. Gallager continues to come and work with us on our Second Step curriculum.  We are reading books about children who have a conflict with a friend. Then we are changing the story to make it go a better way, where children show kindness to each other.  These books will be sent home when we are through and your child’s work will be a great way to start a conversation about what to do when conflicts arise with a friend.
