Hello, First Grade Fans!  We finally had a full week of school after many snow days, holidays, and sick days working their way through our classroom.  I think we are back in the swing of learning and having fun together at school.

100 Day of School letters went home this week describing a challenge I gave to the kids.  Can you collect 100 objects and make something with them?  The purpose is to have the kids practice counting and grouping objects up to 100.  Also, it’s a chance for them to be creative and have fun building something original.  We’ve been sharing ideas at our classroom meetings and I can’t believe how creative the kids are with their ideas.  It will be a great opportunity for them to come up in front of the class to present their work.  Please help your child have his/her project ready to share with the class any day during the week of February 12th.

In math we are practicing building numbers and making different representations of numbers using cubes and number sentences.  You will see number posters coming home with your child in the next few weeks showing the numbers we are working on.  We are also working on measurement and making good estimates in our work.

Our builders are still building every morning!

In writing we have been writing Teaching Books and learning new strategies everyday to help make our teaching books better.  Ask your child what “expert topic” they have chosen to write about.

I’m sure you’ve also heard that we have started our unit on Bears.  We are studying these essential questions:

What is a habitat?  How do you get information from an informational text?  How do bears survive in their habitat?  What adaptations do they have?

You never know what will show up in a first grade classroom.  This morning we had moose antlers.  A teacher found them out in the woods in Shutesbury, and brought them into school to share with us.  The kids loved them and made all kinds of interesting observations.

It’s good to be back at school.  Hope you all have a great weekend!
