We had a special day here in 1st Grade before we took off for holiday break.  We started the day in math learning how to use a tape measure and record our data.  Then Sophie the elf came in to sing special songs for us!  We ended the day with quiet writing time, writing kindness notes for people who are important to us.

Happy Holidays, everyone!  See you next year with more 1st Grade news!

We had two very special birthdays to celebrate today!  Happy Birthday to our wonderful Maggie who turns 7 today and also to our super fun Nocholas who turns 7 on Christmas Eve.  We are so happy they are in our class!

Publishing Party

We had one more reason to celebrate in 1st Grade today!  We just finished writing, editing and publishing a “Small Moment” narrative story.  So we invited Kindergarten to come in and listen to us read our books.  Each 1st Grade writer partnered up with a kindergarten student to share their writing and talk about their story.  A Small Moment story is a true story that zooms in on one important thing.  It has a bold beginning, a middle with lots of details and a good ending.  Ask your child to tell you about the story he/she chose to write about!  If you are in school sometime, feel free to stop in the classroom so your child can read her/his book to you.  The best comment I heard after our guests left was, “I was so nervous to read my book but it made me happy in the end.”  I’m so proud of them!

Assembly

We presented at our school Assembly today!  Below is a link to the movie the kids made under the expert guidance of our technology teacher, Mrs. Gravina.  The movie has a few highlights of what we learned about American Symbols, Capitals and Holidays.  We had a lot of fun making it, especially the commercials, which made us laugh a lot!

After we showed the school our movie, we also sang a beautiful song about the colors of winter.  Here are a couple pictures below.

Overheard in 1st Grade this week:

I said to the kids, “Okay, let’s get our work out.  Today we are going to finish publishing our stories.”

A boy replies, “That’s not actually work, Alissa.  That’s just fun.”
