Mountain Day!

Here are pictures from our trip to Northfield Mountain.  A huge thank you to all the parents and grandparents who joined us.  Having you there made the trip a lot more successful!  We learned a lot about pond life, finding lots of creatures who live in the pond and then bringing them inside to observe them under microscopes.  We also had a lot of fun in the woods.  A hike I thought might take 40 minutes was over in half the time thanks to the marathon pace of the 1st Graders as they took off on the trail!  It was definitely a fun day to remember.  I hope these pictures can help you experience some of the fun!

What a fun day we had today!  In addition to going to see the amazing play the 4th graders performed for us, we also had a special visitor come to our classroom.  Zoe’s mom, Susie, came in with a variety of spices and taught us all a lot about where spices came from, how important they were in the Middle Ages, and how they are different from herbs.  Each child chose a few spices to mix together and you may see your child’s creation coming home in a little Dixie cup today.  Here is some advice from Susie about how to use it:

“They can use their spices in a couple ways: they can just try sprinkling it on their dinner, or if anyone’s baking anything they can add it in.  Or even easier, they can make a piece of toast with some butter and sprinkle it on…like cinnamon toast only better!

Should be used before the weekend for best results.”
It was such a  fun activity and the classroom had the best aroma ever all afternoon!!

Science Lab Surprise

I got another phone call from Nancy today during Science Lab telling me to come down to her classroom quick with the camera.  When I got there, all the first graders were gone.  She opened her closet door and there they were, in the dark, putting to use their new skill of how to light up a light bulb.  What a surprise!
