Even the TEACHERS showed up at school in pajamas today!!!
So did many students. We spent a lot of time today reading to our friends, reading alone, or reading to our favorite stuffed animals that came in from home to visit 1st grade for the day.
Ms. K came in to read a book to the whole class. It was a very funny story about cats.
In the afternoon we were invited to join the 2nd graders for a movie and some yummy popcorn. We watched “Stellaluna”, a movie based on a favorite children’s book.

We made Cornbread today in 1st grade. It was great practice for the children reading and following the steps in a recipe. They were all so excited to take a piece home to share with their families! If you don’t see it come home today, it will be coming home tomorrow. The classroom sure smelled good this morning.
Then we spent some time thinking about all the things, experiences and people we are thankful for. The kids wrote about it at writing time and made very cute Thanksgiving Books to take home to their families. Inside is a poem that many children have practiced reading aloud so they can read it at their family dinner for the holidays.

We continued our unit of study on America. This week we moved on to studying Symbols of America. The kids embarked on their very first steps of doing research. They each read a non-fiction book about our topic, chose one new thing they learned, wrote a sentence to record it, and came back to our class meeting to share what they found out.
Our kindergarten teacher, Dorothy, came to visit! The kids were so excited to see her. They bombarded her with requests, “Can I please read my stories to you??!!”
The Pioneer Valley Performance Arts School came to visit us last Friday for an assembly. They sang for us, played instruments, and got us all up dancing. What fun!
I wrote about Author’s Chair last week but forgot to post a picture. Here is an author reading his work to the class and the other students raising their hands to offer him questions, comments and compliments on his writing.
Centers! Here we are building, making things, playing games. And there’s always a couple kids who just can’t stop writing! The end of our day is always a lot of fun.

Read-A-Thon is coming to 1st Grade next week! On Tuesday, November 26th, all students are invited to wear their pajamas to school and bring in their favorite stuffed animal from home. We will settle in for a long day of reading and reading related activities. Since all first graders have been growing in leaps and bounds in their reading skills, this is a perfect way for us to celebrate all the progress we have made and are making day by day.
If anyone would like to send in a special (healthy) snack for the class to share that day, the kids would love it. Just let me know ahead of time. Great pictures will follow next week!
“Read every day. Lead a better life!”
