Here are photos of each first grader next to the Justice Hero portrait they made holding the book they wrote.  We are so proud of them!  As one writer said to me when we finished our books, “We are all so accomplished!”  We learned about justice, fairness, and the many people who have worked hard to make the world a better place.

Our talented student teacher, Ms. Michaela, led the students in creating Justice Hero portraits this week.  They came out fantastic!  Then the kids wrote about what makes their Justice Hero special.  At the end of the day, each child shared their work with the class and took comments from their friends.  Next week, we will put together another book of all the writing we did about each person.

Here is a peek at Reading Workshop.  Ask your child to tell you about it!  The kids are becoming better readers every day.  🙂

No school next week!  After we return, it will be Michaela’s last week with us.  We will be sad to see her go!  She did a fantastic job being the lead teacher this week.  Hope you enjoy your spring break. 🙂

We started our new social studies unit on “Justice Heroes”.  We are studying people from our country’s history who have worked for justice and fairness for others.  In honor of Women’s History Month, we started with some heroes who fought to get women the right to vote.  We will also learn about people who worked for civil rights and immigrants’ rights.  Ask your child who their favorite Justice Hero is so far.

On Wednesday, we went out exploring fallen logs in the woods.  The kids had flashlights, magnifying glasses, and journals to draw and write about what they observed.  It doesn’t take much to get them curious and working together to find something interesting to report back to the group.

In math, we continue to learn about numbers on the 100 board and the symbols we can use to compare them.

Happy Birthday, Adena!

Here’s a quick peek into first grade this week!

Every week we spend more time in our sit spots.  The kids are becoming excellent observers and recorders of what they see all around them.  This week, we met with Dawn to empty out our maple sap bucket she helped us set up on the playground.  She even let us taste the maple syrup she made with the sap!

We are also working on our number scrolls.  Some of our scrolls are even taller than we are!  We are learning how to notice, read, and write patterns on the 100 grid.

Owen’s brother found a porcupine skull in the woods.  He brought it in to share with us!

Our readers are becoming writers who can summarize the books they are reading through pictures and words.

We finished our Porcupine Chapter Books!  We put them in the library for a “Gallery Walk” so other people in the school could come to see our work.  People wrote comments about what they liked in our books.  The kids were so PROUD!!  I hope you will read your child’s book with them tonight and add your own comments as well.  They worked so hard and are now porcupine experts and experienced non-fiction readers, writers, and researchers.  🙂

Please return the book to school when you are finished looking at it so it can be a part of our classroom collection for the rest of the year.  All books will be sent home with the children in June.

Congratulations, First Grade!
